I have a very pretty 10K Gold Plated, Garnet Ring I no longer wear. It's a size 8 3/4. The bottom part of the band does show a little wear, but the top part is still nice & shiny.

Yes, probably would, especially for someone born in Jan., Can be a Birthstone Ring. But like I said in the description, some of the gold is wearing off on the bottom part of the band. Other than that, it's a nice shiny ring.
