Not true! How many in California did you try? My guess is only one so there is 332 more for you to try. It states "any participating McDonald's" so they are good in 50 States but I cannot guarantee anyone's hometown McDonald's takes them. Sometimes its just the employee/manager that shift and the next person will accept it.

If your McDonald's doesn't take them I will refund you once you send them back to me. I have never had a problem at any of 12 stores but some people do.
