The listing, ANTIQUE Surmadani Kajal Kohl Keeper Holder has ended.

Ok, so I bought this at an estate auction in Houston Texas about 8 years ago. I THOUGHT it was some type of perfume bottle and have just had it displayed in a glass hutch for years with all my other "must haves".
I decided to do some research and found out it is not a perfume bottle but a Surmadani.

Surmadani is a traditional bottle for the eyeliner powder used in Africa, Middle East and South East Asia.

Kajal or Kohl is the black powder eyeliner that is stored in the bottle (this does have some remains inside).
It is traditionally made by grinding galena (lead sulfide).

I have found others similar but nothing as ornate as this one or with the footed stand.

There are no markings that I can understand.

An antique store in Atlanta offered me $125 for it a few months ago. She said she had never seen anything like it and it was definitely very old and well taken care of.

The decorations are called "ascii" (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)
Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ
For Listia "one line ascii" or similar work the best (too large do not always copy well or are not visible on some computers/devices
There are also many, many shortcuts on your keyboard to do simple things like ♥ (press "alt and the number 3 at the same time, release)
Just google "one line ascii for facebook" and you will see bunches.

The writing appears to be Arabic. It could be Egyptian, since they are very famous for wearing the black eyeliner. I always wondered what that was made from, now I know. It's beautiful, but waaaay out of my league. I fanned you, and am watching. I'm curious to see how much it goes for. :)
