Taken from inside cover: It is a long, hot summer in Mississippi near the end of World War II, a summer in which "the sun baked everything...and the locusts and katydids screamed in the trees at night." Missy and her two best friends, Almay and Vanessa, have secrets to share - their swim at Slow Pond to cool off (which results in a near tragedy) and Almay's new boyfriend (who rides a motorcycle, works as a migrant, and has a taste for danger). But the biggest secret is the one that Missy keeps in her heart until she can't keep it secret any longer, the fact that her mother is slowly slipping into madness. Mama's recent behavior has been increasingly alarming and unpredictable, and as the summer progresses, it seems as if the only person to whom Missy can turn for comfort is Geneva, the family maid and housekeeper. Although Geneva has little patience for Missy's antics, she has lots to say about illness and loss and the mysterious ways of God. As Missy comes to terms with her mother's condition, she also learns about growing up - and the place of her mother, her friends, and even God in her life.
