The listing, Dead Crazy (Jenny Cain Mystery) by Nancy Pickard PB 1989 has ended.
Jenny Cain, head of the Port Frederick, Massachusetts, Civic Foundation, takes a special interest in the mentally ill. Her mother is a psychiatric patient who will never recover. When MaryDell Paine, a middle-aged do-gooder, begs Jenny for foundation money to buy a recreation hall for released patients, Jenny feels a natural s... more »ympathy. If it weren't for money and circumstance, her own mother might be one of those confused people wandering the streets. Time is short, however. MaryDell wants the foundation to buy a strange-looking, dirt-covered structure that once housed a church. The building looks like nothing more than a sod house on the prairie, but the land is valuable. Nordic Realty and Development plans to erect an apartment high-rise there, and the company is prepared to hand over a check almost immediately. Jenny can act quickly, too, when she feels a project is right. She likes the building, the facilities and the location. But will the neighbors accept a center for the mentally ill? Jenny goes door-to-door, where the reactions vary from concerned to frightened to hostile. Jenny realizes she must not only find a large sum of money, she must help to educate the community to the needs and realities of the center's clients. Her task is immense, and when a killer begins to stalk the neighborhood, her dream seems impossible. With Geof's help and her own instinct for detection, Jenny searches for a murderer she half hopes she'll never find.
