The "DEAD MAIL MATTER" label authorized (and paid) delivery of those pieces to the Dead Letter Office from a local Post Office and so is an instrument of "Postage" - collectible as such - and rarely seen by the public!

Hi Whitefoote, I found some information on "Dead Mail Matter" and Google pulled up a page from the Encyclopaedia Britannica, which I found very interesting. The link was too long, so I shorted it here: http://tinyurl.com/3magp4u

I could not directly save those pages, but was allowed to download the whole volume. It states the encyclopedia is public domain, so I saved and printed it out.

Any way, it is a very interesting to read, and I guess today with mail that cannot be delivered, that the Post Office still does this. I would love to have a job to search other people's mail and try to find out how to return it to the sender. Very interesting stuff!
