Great question! I started off with compost and then HIGHLY amended it over the years. One of the things I do every year is save eggshells and crab shells, dry them out and crush them into a fine powder. In the Spring, I amend my soil with the entire container. I also add gypsum to my soil every spring. Both of these processes are a long term calcium feed as it usually takes a while for the calcium to break down. For immediate calcium uptake, I amend the soil with epsom salt (magnesium) and then I soil drench with cal/mag. The epsom salt aids in the absorption of the calcium. As I am an organic gardener, I do this yearly to replenish the soil nutrients. Hope this helps!
Awesome info...I use ALOT of epson salt and egg shell here in Florida...but our soil has alot of clay and is seriously lacking...its a struggle to grow Special needs...lol. Thanx so much...crab shells and Oyster shells I got by the pounds and eggs every day from chickens... :-)
You are so lucky! I wish u could raise chickens here but my neighborhood isn't zoned for it. Just an FYI, an added bonus to amending with gypsum is that it not only adds calcium to the soil but it also helps break down compacted clay-ish soil! Happy gardening!
Thanx....I am lucky enough to own 15 acres with NO NEIGHBORS....10 minutes from the Beach. :-) i have Goats..Chickens..Ducks..Horses..Parrots...And KOI FISH!!... Lots of fertilizer... just have no nutrision in the soil cuz it is so close to the Beach...Fight it all the time!!!
