Description

The listing, ~ Vintage 1911 ~ Beautiful Pewter Trinket Box ~ Signal Mountain Hotel, Tennessee has ended.

This beautiful antique pewter trinket box tells a very detailed story from the hardwood floors, to pictures on the walls

Another one of my grandmother's pieces. I have used this box for years, for daily items, jewelry and decoration. The solder has worn off the the top, but in no way takes away from the beauty or detail of this box.

* The stamp on the bottom reads as is: 11 K 19

Now a little History on the details of Signal Mountain Hotel:

~ Located on Walden’s Ridge, the Town takes its name from a promontory of land called Signal Point. Overlooking the Tennessee River Valley and Chattanooga, Signal Point was used by Native Americans, Creeks and Cherokee, to signal messages, and Union troops during the War Between the States as a relay station and to observe traffic on the Tennessee River ~

~ In the late 19th century with cholera & yellow fever epidemics, families in the valley fled to the mountains. By 1913 Mr James had built the Signal Mountain Inn, a grand hotel, and a trolley between the valley and top of the mountain. In 1918 he completed his resort community. ~

~By 1925, the Town of Signal Mountain flourished, now known as the Old Town District. The Inn was purchased by the Alexian Brothers in 1936, now the Alexian Village, a nationally recognized retirement community ~

* I came across a picture from 1936, when the Alexian Brothers purchased it, I included it for your refrence.

Great auction with a description that substantially exceeds every other one I've ever seen on this website. Hope that not going overboard, but I'm struck not only on information included but whats added in question answers.
Maybe other sellers, esp. in antiques, will imitate-
One can dream...

I am so intrigued with the history on antiques, this was my grandmothers and I have so much of her stuff from the 1800 - to early 1900, it is fascinating to learn the history, I've had it for years, along with several more and just never took the time to research, just used them for decorations when I was into shabby chic. Her items went so well with everything. Thank you so much for the nice comment.

Why does this say signal mountain hotel ??? Is the boxes origin?? Just wandering bc I am from Chattanooga .

yes it is original and from the Signal Hotel, It has a crest on the lid, and date on the bottom. The description gives explicit detail of it's origin. It was with many of my grandmothers treasures which are dated anywhere from the 1800's to the early 1900's. Everything has publishing dates or is stamped. Thank you for your interest.

Thanks Connie, much appreciated! You know, I never hear anyone talking about this, but some of the most frustrating things I go through at Listia is having to cut back on a description because of character restrictions! It really PO's me no end to have a beautifully written description that presents an item perfectly, and then have to pick and choose which words phrases and facts to leave out simply because Listia is miserly with their characters!! And there's no dang reason for it, as there's plenty more space on the page! It's all about Listia being CHEAP! I mean, come on, how many millions of dollars do we make Listia EVERY Week, and they can't let us finish our descriptions?? THAT'S BOGUS!!
Namaste!
Blessed be,
victor

Thanks for all the hard work, and additional information! I wonder if perhaps the 'Alexian Village' (you say it's still open?) might have some historical items or documents that might shed some light on our little mystery? About the only source i can think of lacking the manufacturer. Research just for our own benefit, at this point, as the auctions down to it's final 12 hours, but still of interest to me, and I'm sure you still have questions, lol! I really do appreciate your making every effort to answer my questions...I know I can be a bit of a burden at times, and that's putting it lightly, lol!! You have a great day, and I wish us all luck, and offer my congratulations, in advance, to whichever of us wins this awesome piece! And, most of all, Thank You for the fine listing!
Namaste!

no bother at all, and I want to know everything about it also, that's why I was so determined to find the pewter maker "k". btw, the "completion" of the hotel/resort was the addition of a golf course at the latest date, I had to take that out due to the # of characters I'm allowed to use, (it was up and running years before that, for other reasons as explained...military) I had a lot more to say that I learned from the internet.....I should have just put a link to the page like I did on my grandmothers book, that auction ended a few days ago, "discourses on the lords prayer - 1850 First Edition, I learned a lot about that also, fascinating to me also. (the story behind the item) you have a great rest of the weekend and thanks for the intrigue

For crookedman: My husband was helping me with this this morning, he pulled up on his phone (going back to Mr. Jame's history in the 1800's) a picture from 1913 of the building and it too looks the same as the one posted in the tin and from the one off the internet from 1936.....seems the building remained the same for years.....(until I think the 50's, even then, they didn't change the front of the building, but I'd have to go back and re-read all the dates again. I spent days of research on this, and this is the interpretation as I believe it. I cannot add his picture off the phone from that period as I can no longer update this auction. I put up the 1936 picture because it was the very first one I came across when I was doing my research, I did not go back to 1913 to find pictures of it then and now I sure wish I did, my husbands picture would have eliminated your confusion on this and no you are not dense, there are several different time periods around this historical building and was used for multiple purposes during that time period, military first....then guest couple years later. thank you for your question, you woke my brain up today!!!!!

I'm sorry, I guess I'm dense...If the box was made in 1911, for what, to memorialize the building of the Inn? But the Inn, according to the history you gave us, was built in 1913...and apparently didn't finish it until 1918. And then there's the plaque showing the INN, did you notice that the plaque and the 1936 picture you found are not just both picture of the same building, they are identical pictures of the same building, from the same angle showing the same things, including the same trees. In fact, if you examine the trees in both, they are placed in the same places, and are almost the same age...the ones shown on the plaque appear to be no more than 5-6 years younger than those in the picture... I'm not trying to throw your story into question, but, I'm truly confused, and would like to understand why all the discrepancies...It's a fascinating Mystery, yes? Thanks for listing such an interesting and fascinating piece! It's the stories that make something 'Special', you know, not how pretty it is or if it has a jewel in it or something! The story trumps the bottom line!!

I'm no historian, but knowing for a fact that my grandfather was on the USS Mongolia, Chattanooga TN in 1-25-19 as it is hand written in his pocket bible. I know he was in that area (I don't know how much before or after Jan. 1919). The Inn remained in the same condition for years as previously stated The way I understand it, the box is def. made in 1911 (stamp on bottom), and the hotel construction was completed and opened in 1913, (used for military purposes, (had their first guest in 1918) I believe "they" purchased the 1911 box and had their stamp added. I have yet to find the company "K" who made the box, to get more history on that, (I know that would complete my story, to know who bought the boxes and had them stamped and for what purpose) I have seen many metal trademarks, just haven't found that one yet with the connection to the Signal Inn. Mr. James had plans for this hotel for 30 years before he finally completed construction and opened it 1913, with the first in 1918 (Read that this morning) *** I know they sold bonds back then to raise money for schools and such.......only a guess (when any one can do), these too may have been made to promote the "New Hotel" and raise money for bonds?????

I had to unpack it, it's pretty heavy. The only scale I have is a food scale and I've never used it so I don't understand it, but a small can (7 3/4 oz) of veges = 265 / trinket box = 220, pics of scale and items are going to be added now, I apologize now for the reference, it's the best I can do.......

jychauncey, the first 2 numbers are definitely 11 K is the pewter trademark, which I am also still trying to research who that belongs to, I think it may be British, not sure yet, and the last 2 numbers are 19. I don't know where you got 1936 but the 2nd 1 is on a raised mark, maybe that's where you're getting the 9 from, in the first 2 numbers???
