The listing, 1944 Philippines 1 Centavo United States Territory Coin! has ended.
Really cool 1944 World War II Philippines 1 Centavo coin! The Philippines were a US Territory before World War II when the Japanese attacked and captured the Philippine Islands in 1941-42. We've all heard of the fall of Corregidor and General MacAurther's proclamation that "I shall return!" which he did in 1944. The loss of Corregidor on Bataan led to the Bataan Death March in which 2,500 to 10,000 Filipino and United State Soldiers died on the 60 mile journey to Camp O'Donnell. The islands were retaken by the US on Oct 20th 1944. The Philippines were granted Independence by the U.S. on 4 July 1946. This coin was minted after the islands were retaken in 1944. It says "United States of America 1944" on one side surrounding the federal shield with an American eagle on top. The words "1 Centavo Filipinas" surrounding an adolescent male seated at an anvil and holding a hammer in his right hand. In the distance is seen the smoking volcano of Mt. Mayon. The last of these bronze coins were minted in 1945. I bought this from a client that had a relative that sailed on merchant ships from the late 1800's to WWII. This is one of the coins he colloected. Pick up this highly collectible coin which also makes a great gift. Thanks!
