If you're looking at this, you most likely know exactly what it's useful for: integrating a PC into your home theater. For those of you who need to know a bit more, please read on.

The problem is that a good deal of copy-protected content cannot be carried outside of your PC except as analog signal - and that's where this device comes in.The DTS-610 has three 1/8" analog stereo inputs used to connect to the analog outputs on your PC sound card. This analog input is then digitized and encoded in 5.1 channel surround using the DTS codec, then output through either optical (TOSLINK) or coaxial SPDIF. There is also a digital pass-through feature, accepting a digital stream from your PC's (or other device's) optical or coax out and routing it to the optical output.

All encoding is done within the device (ie, there is essentially no demand on your CPU at all). If you want to add your PC into your home theater system and your receiver either has no analog surround sound inputs (or they're already occupied), this is the device you want.
