The listing, Antique Victorian Book Locket 4 Tintype Pictures of Children Mourning or Remembrance has ended.
While I love to collect many things, I think antique photographs are my favorite. There's something about looking at pictures of people who lived 80-150 years ago! Each one has a story, and I wish I could learn them all.
Here I present to you a most interesting Victorian locket. This little book locket has six pages for gem size tintypes. There are two photos in the front and two in the back. The center pages don't have any photos. There are pictures of two little girls and two little boys. Sadly, I don't know anything about them--perhaps they were someone's children or grandchildren. Perhaps these children passed too soon, so their photos were kept in this locket. Or perhaps this locket was carried by a loving father who had to travel far away from home to find work. I just don't know...but I love thinking about it.
The locket itself is gold tone (I think gold plated) and it is a book-style locket with six pages--it resembles a larger photo album. There is a clasp to keep the locket closed, but it no longer stays latched. In order to remove or add photos, I think you need to push the top of each page up to unbend it and then bend it down again. I recommend taking it to a jeweler so that the locket doesn't get damaged. A jeweler could also fix the latch at the same time. There is some wear to the gold plate primarily on the pages with children's photos. The center pages are not worn at all. It makes me think that perhaps someone looked at and handled this locket often.
Low starting bid, no GIN, what's better than that?
