It's said that Tim Raines is overlooked in baseball history because his career ran concurrent to Rickey Henderson; Raines was one of the greatest leadoff hitters ever and the most proficient base stealer (he attempted steals considerably less than Rickey), but Rickey got the headlines because, frankly, he was THE greatest.
Trevor Hoffman is the Tim Raines in this equation, behind Mariano Rivera. Hoffman actually held the saves record for a while before Rivera grabbed it, and was the first reliever to reach 600 (honestly, Rivera and Hoffman are the only over 500, they're way past the field). Common sense says Hoffman should be elected to the Hall of Fame in 2017, but who knows ... Tim Raines is still on the ballot all these years later.
