Bridge of the Gods ...
The Bridge of the Gods is located at Columbia River at River Mile (RM) 148, nearly three miles upstream of Bonneville Dam, and just downstream of the historic canal and locks at Cascade Locks. On the Washington side, the community of Stevenson is located 2 1/2 miles upstream and immediately downstream is Ice House Lake and the southern end of the Pacific Crest Trail. The bridge is located at the toe of the Table Mountain Landslide (Bonneville Landslide) which created the Cascade Rapids.
The Bridge ...
The Bridge of the Gods is a cantilever bridge, 1,131 feet long, with an overall bridge length of 1,858 feet. The bridge was built in 1926 and then raised in 1938 to accommodate the rising pool behind the Bonneville Dam. Currently the Bridge of the Gods is a toll bridge allowing motor and foot traffic, and it is the Columbia River crossing for the Pacific Crest Trail.
"Constructed in 1926 the Bridge of the Gods takes it name from a Native American myth describing a large natural rock bridge over the Columbia River at the bridge site. The bridge was originally 1,127-feet long but was lengthened to 1,856-feet and raised in conjunction with the construction of Bonneville Dam downstream from the site. The bridge is a fine example of cantilever technology in Oregon as well as a major crossing of the Columbia River. (Historical Highway Bridges of Oregon - 1989)"
