The listing, 10 Cherimoya Fruit Seeds has ended.

Ever try a cherimoya? It is one of my favorite fruits! Their taste is described as combination of the banana, pineapple, and strawberry. i always thought of them tasting like vanilla pudding myself. It is a complete fruit containing almost all the essential nutrients in adequate proportions.

The cherimoya is native to the Andean highlands in the South America, in the valleys of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chile and Columbia. It is a semi-evergreen shrub, fast growing and fairly dense. There leaves are dark green, simple, growing alternately, and appear velvety green when seen from some angles. They are grown in California, but I am a fan of indoor tropical plants and these do lend themselves to this use. These trees have the capacity tolerate light frosts.

One way to germinate these is to place fresh seeds in ziplock bag with moistened peat moss. Seal the bag and lay it in a warm place. You could also use any warm spot like the top of a TV or computer or a heating pad.

For growing cherimoya, you need sun during the day and cooler temperatures at night. The growth of this tree takes place in one long flush, usually beginning in April. They do best in well drained soil. It needs around 50 to 100 hours of chilling a year, and plenty of moisture to grow. However, it should not be watered while it is dormant. Water should not be allowed to stand.

The flowers of the cherimoya tree are yellow-brown in color, having a purple spot at the base. They are generally produced in clusters. The cherimoya flowers are hermaphroditic. They cannot self-pollinate as they have a mechanism which does not allow this. These flowers are female in the initial stage, but they later on convert into males. Therefore, they require a self pollinator who cans collect the pollens from the flower in the male stage, and deposit it back in its female stage.

I found this reference:

Yields vary greatly depending on pollination practices. Five-year-old trees that have not been artificially pollinated can produce 25 or more fruits per season. Thirty year-old trees in Italy have produced up to 300 fruits.

Hand pollination tests in New Zealand produced up to 100 fruits per tree.

Timing of harvest is crucial, and care must be taken with harvested fruit. If picked too early, the fruit will not ripen properly and will become mealy. Overripe fruit can split, resulting in rapid decay.
