Questions & Comments
These cards may be older, but they still smoke the newer entry level Nvidia cards.
If you compare these to the $50 GeForce 520, for instance, you will see that they are over twice as fast. The trade-off is in the Direct X codec: These cards are Direct X 10, while the newer stuff is Direct X 11. Of course, this only effects Direct X 11 games.
On the desktop - these are pretty good cards with far better specs than the entry level cards on the market. The fact that they are 256MB is not as important as one may think. Video cards now come with huge amounts of excessive RAM because RAM is dirt cheap these days and it is useful as a 'Marketing Gimmick.' A $50 1GB video card in no way is capable of actually USING 1GB of memory. (It's complete nonsense, actually!) I will use the GeForce 520 again as the example:
The GeForce 520 sporting 1GB of RAM offers only 14.4GB of Video Bandwidth running on a 64-bit Memory Interface.
In comparison, the GeForce 8600 GTS sporting 256MB of RAM boasts 32GB of Memory Bandwidth running on a 128-bit Memory Interface.
Video cards deliver imagery to your monitor in the same fashion that your internet connection delivers data to the imagery. So, in essence:
New GeForce 520 1GB = 14.4GB 64-bit line Old GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB = 32GB 128-bit line
These cards may be 'old', but they are far from slow... ;)
