Our jeweler has indicated the diamond on this buttercup earring is real. Probably 1/4K but we did not pay him for a formal analysis. There is only one earring and there is not a back to the earring.

That is a good question. If I had to guess I would way gold. However, there are not any stamps or markings to indicate exactly what it is.
