The harness is very small. I used it on my rat when he was just a few months old. He is about 10 months old now and it's wayyyy to small. You probably could use the lookout as a house but it would roll so you would want to have bedding around it to keep it still. The tube detaches from it. But it is for a very small critter too an older rat will most likely be way to big to fit. Hope that helps! Any other questions just ask :) TY
