The listing, 1878 Indian Head Penny Semi-Key Date has ended.
Auction: an 1878 Indian Head Penny, semi-key date. The coin is in good condition according to Red Book criteria, although some of the letters in what is essentially a missing LIBERTY seem to be trying to pop through, i.e, the letters are not 100% worn over so badly like w/many Indian Heads.
About 5.8 million of these were minted, although no one knows how many are left. The Red Book lists this coin @ $35 in the Red Book in good condition, but the damage to the penny must be considered:
Picture 1 shows the obverse of the coin, which shows some obvious scratches. Picture 2 shows the obverse of the coin at an angle which shows 2 gouges & in looking more closely, there is some kind of "dent" for lack of a better word, in the space between the Indian's head & the lettering UNITED STATES on the left.
When you hold the penny at a certain angle on its side, you can see where it is mildly bent, but I was unable to get a good picture of it. The penny does lie flat IMO.
The reverse of the coin also shows several scratches, some lighter & a couple which are deeper. I can see 5 "thinner" scratches on the reverse that go through the rim, & 2 deeper ones below the CE in CENT. I also see 2 minor rim dings @ 10:00 & 12:00.
Other than the damage, the date and lettering is excellent, & the inner rims show terrific detail. I would speculate that this coin did not have that much circulation to have retained its rims, lettering, and strong date, but it did receive some deliberate "abuse."
All Listia rules apply. No international shipping. Penny will be sent in a 2x2 w/mylar protection. I can only ship to a verified address.
