This is a size E/3.50 Boye crochet hook. It's lime green and green. I make these myself. It makes the hook much easier to hold, and more comfortable.

It depends on what you would like to crochet. But not typically, smaller hooks usually mean more detail and smaller stitches. I would say for a beginner either a g or higher.

I'm sure the rag rug was a descent size hook. and the afghan you can do in pretty much any size hook. yea they suggest a size but since you don't need it a specific size then you can use whatever.
