Sorry, I don't knit... I found these in a storage building we purchased. But my guessing would be the bigger for a beginner because it would make larger stitches.

I am a novice knitter myself. I found that the 6's were the easiest to start with. It also depends on the yarn that you plan to use and what size it calls for as well :)
