Description
The listing, Sixteen (16) Vintage State of Ohio Tax Stamps / Consumer’s Receipts has ended.
16 UNUSUAL VINTAGE AND GENUINE OHIO SALES TAX STAMPS OF VARIOUS DENOMINATIONS. WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET!! Please ask any questions before you bid!
Ohio enacted its first sales tax in 1935. The rate was 3%, with two-thirds of the money designated for the public school system. Merchants were required to buy these stamps in various denominations from the state and hand them out to consumers as sales tax receipts for purchases made. The merchant would tear or cut off the stamps from a sheet, so the edges where they were attached were often rough. The state discontinued the stamp program in 1962.
The statement on each stamp reads: Always obtain from vendor state of Ohio prepaid sales tax consumer’s receipt on all taxable purchases. Printed by Merrick Lithograph Company. They measure roughly 1.5 inches square.
