Wouldn't recommend you to get this for a one year old UNLESS you're going to store it until the child is ready. One year olds are quite busy. I'' say this is for ages 2 & up. I just tried having my one year old interact with this for the past hour & he has no interest in trying to sit still enough to do this. Sorry

It depends on how advanced the child is. My 3 year old has been writing since she was 2. This isn't challenging to her. So if your 6year old is already writing then I'll say no. This is for someone who is beginning to write.
