His name was Giuseppe Melchior Sarto and he was born at Riese, at Upper Venetia in Italy in 1835. He entered the seminary at Padua in 1850 and was ordained a priest in 1858. First he worked as a priest for several years at a parish at Tombolo, Italy. He was made a pastor at a parish at Salzano in 1867. He was made a canon at the cathedral of Treviso in 1875. In 1884 he was made the bishop of Mantua. In this diocese of Mantua he restored the Catholic faith to the inhabitants by strengthening the seminaries and in making sure the faith was taught accurately to the people by the priests. In 1893, Pope Leo XIII (r. 1878-1903) made him a cardinal and appointed him patriarch of Venice. He successfully held this position for ten years. During the Vatican conclave of 1903 he was elected on August 4th the next Pope of the Catholic Church. He took the name Pius and adopted the motto Instaurare omnia in Christo, "To restore all things in Christ." Pope Pius X wrote the encyclical Pascendi Diminici Gregis in September 1910 which he used to oppose Modernism. He reformed and reorganized the church curia. He promoted daily Holy Communion saying "Holy Communion is the shortest and safest way to Heaven." He died on August 20, 1914. He was beatified on June 3, 1951 and canonized by Pope Pius XII on May 29, 1954
