these are railroad date nails- it was explained to me that railroad companies used these nails when experimenting with different types of wood and wood treatment methods for the ties to try and determine which woods and treatments would provide the best longevity and durability over time..these are very nice examples of these hard to find collectible pieces of railroad history!
