Yeah, it works (as shown in the pictures).
It takes 4 AAA batteries (included).
It does come with a roll of label tape, used only to test it and show that it works (going back to the pictures again).

Great item! I've been wanting one of these. Do they still sell this model in stores? Can you still get replacement tape for it? How much does the tape cost?

I have seen these in office supply store's stores. I usually just order the replacement tape from amazon because it's cheaper. You can get the replacements $8 for 2 of them on amazon.
