This is a lovely necklace , it appears to be very old, I'd say Victorian from the 1800's to early 1900's. I think it's what is called Jet a black glass.I wore it when I was in my teens and I'm in my 50's now, so I know it's at least that old. It probably would be a good idea to restring it.if you plan on keeping it another forty years. It does seem quite strong, but no guarantees.I guess it depends on how much you wear it. I loved it, so I wore it a lot! The clasp is not any special metal, but serviceable, and it was comfortable enough that I wore it all of the time, It's elegant and Goth at the same time. I can be worn with a cute black dress, and looks fab, or just with a nice blouse, or antiquey looking black Victorian style dress. If you are a collector of nice jewelry, this is a good one to add.
