Here is the History;
When Manhattan was settled by the Dutch, there was no national mint, so colonists circulated the copper "Duit," the standard coin denomination in Holland now widely renowned as the original "penny." Also called the "New York Penny".
The copper coin issued by the Dutch East India Company, was frequently used in circulation as a cent, earning it the title of "New York's First Cent." The Dutch negotiated with the Shinnecock Indians to buy the entire island of Manhattan for the equivalent of a bag of 9,600 Duits!
