As far as I remember the original Nintendo GB DS couldn't play Original Game Boy games

Gameboy is just the name for the series of handheld consoles& games created by Nintendo, I believe. The only difference between GB Advanced & GB SP is the shape/design of the console, the games, however, are identical and interchangeable. Like melindasolotko already said, GB Color games can be played on any other system, but the console only accepts GBC games. GB DS and DSL can accept any game prior to their make, but as stated previously by mellindasoltko, the DSI (and I believe the 3DS) won't take games prior to their creation. I know there was the GB Mini or Micro or whatever it was way back when, but I don't think it accepts any games besides the GBM games. Since I don't have a charger for mine, that is still being researched, lol.

if i remember correctly you can play game boy color games on sps but not any other system like you can play game boy adavance on the ds and ds lite but not on the dsi and up

just a piece of advice a small flat rate box is $4.95 and comes with and auto tracking # if you are gonna stick around here grab a hand full next time you go to the PO they are really handy and most times cheaper to ship that way
