Questions & Comments
Is your plant solanum ovigerum or solanum melongena? Thanks. Easter Egg Plant is in the same family as angel trumpet, tomatoes and Jerusalem cherry: the nightshade family. Its scientific name is Solanum ovigerum. The fruit is remarkably similar to a hen’s egg but it is not edible. To confuse matters, there are also varieties of the edible, culinary eggplant, Solanum melongena, which have small white fruit. Like the other members of this common garden plant family, Easter Egg Plant is an annual.
The plant has fruit that is somewhat like a small eggplant. There are two varieties of the plant, they say one grows edible fruit (S. melongena) and the other does not (S. ovigerum) The fruit starts out white and look just like an egg. As the season extends the fruit will mature to deep pastel cream, yellow, orange or possibly green. I have heard a few people say they had a reddish color and purple colored egg. - See more at: http://thegardenersrake.com/grow-an-easter-egg-plant#sthash.CBZMc6c7.dpuf
Annual Solanum Ovigerum, melongena esculentum, wonder egg, Ornamental White Easter Egg Plant. Flowers are lilac. Eggs are white and turn yellow, then to a dark gold color when ripe.
A fact sheet published by the University of Florida's Cooperative Extension Service explains the differences between S. ovigerum (grown as an inedible ornamental plant) and white fruit varieties of S. melongena, which are edible: Fruit color: S. ovigerum fruit is white when immature but turn yellow as they mature. S. melongena fruit remains white at maturity, some with a hint of green. Fruit size: S. ovigerum fruit typically remains small, resembling their namesake hen's eggs in size and shape. S. melongena white varieties grow to typical eggplant size at maturity, significantly larger than the ornamental fruit. Read more: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1383/#ixzz2c3flDD3S
