Although these notes are dated 1934, they were issued in 1943-45. The War Department wanted American service members to have currency familiar to them for personal use in North Africa and Europe. However, there was concern over the possibility of US banknotes falling into the hands of enemy forces, and the economic damage that could result from manipulation by Germany or Italy.

It was decided to issue special Silver Certificates in denominations of $1, $5, and $10 bills like this one. They were the same as the other notes in circulation at the time, except for the bright yellow seal that replaced the usual blue ones. They were legal tender and could be used anywhere US notes were accepted.

The purpose was that if large numbers of these bills fell into Axis hands, an announcement could be made that henceforth, all notes with a yellow seal are worthless. It never happened, and since no American money has ever been declared worthless, they can still be used as legal tender today.

But who would ever do that?!

These notes are gorgeous; I have the $1 and the $10 in this series, and I love them. Good luck with the auction! F&W
