Questions & Comments
Are you sure your 1942 half penny is 50% silver? I thought all british half pennies made until 1970 here just bronze.
Thought so too, but these 2 are quite different metals. I finally found this link- http://www.ebay.com/gds/British-coins-silver-content-for-bullion-buyers-/10000000001664130/g.html and it explained that during that time frame they did some in 50% silver. I have 2 auctions of the 2 different coins. Even the weights are different a bit...and the the darker one is definitely copper nickel. Does this help?
But how can you know for sure that you have 2 that are silver when it clearly states the ones that had silver in them were minted in extremely small quantities.
pogo- I haven't tested them, I'm going on research reading and the years in the text. Let's say for your argument I'm reasonable sure. Maybe even quite sure. What are the other choices if not silver mix? 50% silver is not a lot so mixing with another metal will make it not only cheaper to make, but different than copper nickel for sure. I don't know who had these before me and I've had them a LONG time. I don't know why they have holes, but others have written to say theirs have holes too. I had read that article from a coin expect I posted in both my auctions where he/she states that during these years they made some ion silver, but they did not mention quantity nor could I find that on the web anywhere as to amount.
BTW- the article does NOT say extreme, it states they were made of 50% silver during the years I posted.
