The listing, Megladons!!Ancient Shark's Teeth! has ended.
This auction is for 6 Megladons , that is Shark's teeth that are fossilized and an estimated 15 to 25 MILLION years old . Some Megladons are from Sharks that are totally extinct now. I don't know enough to tell you if any of these are,but they maybe.
Wow!! 52 watchers! That's the most I've had yet!! Can't wait to see who wins!! Very exciting!! these are a great item , great Xmas present for Fossils hunters or collectors! Or starting a collection! Or starting a new hobby for a child! Oneday I'd love to go find them myself ! It must be a thrill! Is anyone here a fossil hunter?
I think this maybe it, I do remember having a long piece of a bigger one ,like a pendant shape, but it's been years since I've seen it. it is possible it could show up one day, if it does I will post it. TY for asking.
If you go to Wiki and look under "largest Specimens" (this ever found.) One mentioned found by the "Megladon Man" was 7.6 inches That is the largest ever found. If you find any larger , please send them to me!! ASAP!!!! Lol! That is how they are measured by "the slant height" (the angled side of the tooth(the actual height is much less ,probably 6 1/4 inches- but I'm not good at calculating mathematics!). And yes, they are big as most hands, but very few like this exist- they are quite rare!
Not saying that these are not from an ancient shark but are you sure they are from megaldon that's a type of shark that makes any breed of shark today look like a minnow. The teeth would have to be at least the size of an adult humans hand
No they aren't all big, remember the teeth start small when the Megladons were little, The back teeth even of the biggest Megaldons, are generally not more than 2 " the Front teeth are much larger. the best comparison I can make is , your two front teeth are the biggest, it's the same foe Megladons.
Wow!! I was just looking at a site online that had 60 million hits! Megladons are much more popular than I could have imagined! There are movies on Youtube, too, I will have to check out! One site has fabulous teeth for sale , the biggest ones are thousands of dollars! He describes the back teeth as usually being no bigger than 2 1/2 " and those go for $80 to $200 each!
Ah ha....my son just confirmed that ......I just get very fact oriented .....these are awesome though..I guess you learn something new everyday...thank you for the education
Thanks, Shelley , I'm always open to questions, and actually I had been thinking of telling you to send your son pics, doesn't hurt to have a professional authenticate them!! I was even just discussing with a friend that there are 2 people here in CT archaeologists who could also authenticate them.. There also some very good sites, if you put "Megladons " into Google search, I learned some fascinating facts myself!! It's hard for me to wrap my head around the idea of a 70 ft long fish!! I swim in the ocean quite a lot and I know I'd be terrified to run into one of these!! And the idea that these were not just a hundred years old ,not thousands of years old , but millions, is just incredible to me! That I can hold the tooth of a 70 ft long shark that lived millions of yrs ago(ten to twenty-five million), is what I call awesome!!Thanks for all you questions, comments and interest.(I'm a very fact oriented person , too!)
There were also Juvenile megalodons, like the ones that I sold. But from the black color of Listernas these are Megs. They don't resemble rocks at all to me, I have seen those and you can tell they are rocks, these aren't. Notice the porousness look on the root parts?
Please don't think I am "fighting" with you I am not trying to my son was telling me that a lot of people from the late 1800's to the early 1900's would use rocks that were very similar in size to ancient teeth of all types of animals and pass them off as real. So please accept this as education and not as a debate. thank you....They do look nice though
No, Shelley , I'm sure that's true, but these , I will guarantee are teeth, the feel is different , the weight is different, the look is different .02Knight is quite right , the roots of the teeth are very obviously teeth. Take a good look at the last photo of Megladons, they have a "grain" to them that conforms to the shape of the tooth ,that is is starts up at the top wider and narrows to the point, you won't see that in rocks.
Great Auction......I asked my son about this who is in school to be a shark biologist and he says the megladon teeth are way to small. He said the only mega shark that could have lost those are newborns ,,,,,,I always check with my son before I get any shark items......He is wondering where you got them from?
I've had them at least 30 years , I don't recall where I bought them (I know I didn't find them, but many come from South Carolina or Georgia). I think it was probably from an antique dealer or flea market. I've been to so many over the years, I do wish I'd kept a record of where I bought things!! I have a bunch of little ones ,too, I haven't found, and I know I had a tall piece (less that a half , about a third of a roughly 3" tooth. Anything over 3" is very expensive. I would gues the small ones were from babies, but some of the megladons were different sizes, look at the chart on the last photo ,up top shows a number of types. There were many different kinds, most are extinct.
Very nice looking Megalodon teeth, this auction should do well. I have sold a couple on here myself. Listerna has 6 all at one time! Fossil collectors should take advantage of this, if not I will! Watching Listerna!! Great auction! She is correct on her pricing also.
I checked online, with several sites and this group is easily $60 to several hundred dollars worth(figuring $10 each! The larger ones are worth much more!!)
