Description

The listing, 6 Clear Crystals! Wow!! & 5 pieces of Bismuth has ended.

This auction is for six clear natural crystals, the shortest a little under 1 3/4 inches the longest a bit less than 2" Sorry , I have to charge for shipping, As these are so pretty I don't want to take any chance they could broken.I am also including 5 pieces of rainbow colored Bismuth crystals.Bismuth is a fascinating metal ! It's is brittle(these pieces were from a larger piece that broke) so I do recommend if you are making them into jewelry to wrap them with copper or some other metal, and don't drop them on concrete or hard surface (like glass ,they can shatter) . Bismuth is heavier in it's liquid form than solid form(like water). It has many uses, in medicine,it's used in Pepto-Bismol and many other stomach medications. It has a low toxicity and is replacing lead in many things, including solder. It has a low melting point, and can be crystalized in a lab(these maybe , I don't know). It is used in cosmetics, too.The crystals are unusual because they form in a steppe arrangement, and the surface is so light refractive it appears as a rainbow of colors. These pieces were grown in West Germany, and I got them from a wholesale dealer at a mineral show in Yonker's Raceway, many , may years ago. I have other pieces I may list in the Collectibles section of Listia.(I wasn't sure how to categorize mineral specimens! Lol!) . Also they are a little like glass , as far as sharp edges, so you do want to take care (like glass) not to leave these around small children,as they are quite attractive looking

The Bismuth crystals are a heavy metal. It was used in jewelry going back to the Incas who used it along with copper. I'm not a scientist , but if I understand it correctly it's Alpha Decay half life is at least double the life of the universe(I think it is quite a lot longer actually, lol!! But who will ever know!! It is also Diamagnetic (you can look that up! I'm not a Science Professor! Lol!)It was among the first metals (minerals) to be named and discovered in the 1600's although as I say it certainly was known and used prior by the Incas. But in the 1600's was when is was realized to be elemental.

You can go to kuriositas.com for a great article and more pics, at the end is a link on how to make Bismuth crystals. The melting point is over 270 degrees , so be careful if you try it!
