What do the KM numbers mean?

The KM numbers are from the coin catalog. It is the standard coin reference by Kruse publishing. Kruse is to coins as Scott calalogs are to stamps.

Thanks for the information...My grandfather collected U.S. coins. I am thinking about starting an international collection. My husband is Australian, I've traveled quite a bit and it just seems more fun and exotic. But, I'd be a total novice so I am not quite sure what I would be getting into. Is international coin collection harder than US? Or just different?
