It attached to the nose band and then wraps around the mouth so that the horse can't play with there bit.

OH why didn't you say so like a figure 8 noseband. you can change the noseband but as far as attaching on I am not sure how you would do that so if it was me I would just get a new nose band that has the piece already on it. but that's me

I have had it for 21/2 years and I don't know before that but like I said it is in good shape it could use some oil though
