The listing, 1962 Topps TERRY FOX (Detroit Tigers) - "Canada's Greatest Hero" GREAT STORY! READ! has ended.
This is a 1962 Topps #191 TERRY FOX baseball card.
Terry was a pitcher with the Detroit Tigers.
Terry Fox pitched 7 seasons (6 with Detroit) as a relief pitcher. In his first 2 full seasons (1961-1962) he had an 8-3 record with 28 saves and a miniscule 1.56 ERA.
But, alike Pirates legend Roberto Clemente, Terry's story is more a humanitarian story than a baseball story.
The Canadian born athlete had his leg amputated as the result of cancer in 1977. In 1980, he began a trek across Canada, known as the "Marathon of Hope", running on an artificial limb to bring awareness to cancer research and raising $1.7 million on his run. Health reasons forced him to abandon the run after 143 days and over 3300 miles. The attention eventually garnered another $21 million in donations to cancer research from television networks and corporations. Sadly, Terry died in 1981 while enduring chemotherapy treatment.
Since Terry's trek, there is the annual "Terry Fox Run" in Canada, which slowly grew into an international event ... and which is the largest one-day fundraiser for cancer research. The Terry Fox Run has helped raise over $500 million for cancer research to date.
A 1999 national survey named Terry Fox the greatest Canadian hero, an honor he certainly earned.
Card is in decent shape, especially considering that the 1962 set is condition sensitive. Check out the pictures.
