The listing, 1952 William STRATTON Congress Governor Illinois "Billy the Kid" political election campaign pin tab has ended.
Offered is an approximately one inch 1" gold and black lithographed metsl fold over lapel button hole political election campaign badge pin-back item that was likely used for the Gubernatorial election of Republican William Stratton in Illinois beginning in 1952 or perhaps as early as 1940 for his congressional campaigns
William Grant Stratton, born in 1914 and died in 2001, was known as "Billy the Kid." He was 32nd Governor of Illinois from 1953 to 1961. He was elected to succeed Democrat Governor Adlai Stevenson II (son of the presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson).
Stratton served two terms as a Congressman, elected in 1940 and 1946. He was elected State Treasurer in 1944 and 1950. He became the youngest governor in America at that time.
Stratton was re-elected Governor in 1956. In 1960 he ran for an unprecedented third consecutive term, but was defeated by Democrat Otto Kerner, Jr.
According to Wikepedia, Stratton was acquitted on charges of tax evasion in 1965. In 1968, he ran in the Republican primary for Governor and was defeated by Richard B. Ogilvie. Many things are named after Stratton in Illinois.
