Joe Mantenga is Dr. John Novelli, overworked in the under-staffed and under-financed emergency room of the East End Medical Center. Working with his head nurse Dehlia Johnson(Lynn Whitfield), Novelli is abrasive and sometimes down-right rude, but he gets the job done--and the job is saving lives. Novelli is up against a crumbling hospital system, a system that can't afford the equipment or manpower it needs for the endless stream of emergencies a Doctor faces. When car-crash victim Jim Anderson is wheeled in one night, he seems in good shape, but vital equipment is malfunctioning, and without it Novelli can't be sure.
