Repoussing is a metal-forming technique, which from a French translation, means pushing up. As you can see the coin is pushed up to form a 3D impression into the genuine coin.

It is now three pennies thick!

With this coin, a three-dimensional image of Abraham Lincoln is pressed into the coin, UP into the image of Lincolns engraving on the front of the coin. On the back side you can see Lincoln's image pushed in.

For pennies made after 1982 the whiteness of the coin's metal (the zinc), can be seen through the copper plating at the highest points. (Coins made before 1983 are all copper and the zinc metal cannot be seen on the highest points of the pushed up metal points.)
