There is 3 settings. First setting emits a high pitch sound that dogs cannot bear therefor they leave the area immediately. Second setting is the "at command" setting, gets your dogs attention. You emit this one when he is doing unwanted behaviour or when you want him paying attention to you. When you press either of these two setting the light beam also comes on. The third setting is just the light beam. When you press this only the light will come on and no sound will be emitted. After your dogs are accustomed to the dog whistle associated with the light you will no longer need to use the whistle, and you can just use the light.
