Why does it have a hole in it. I wonder because I have a coin from the same time period and it also has a hole in it.

It some parts of the world, this would have been a rather costly coin. A lot of people back then used to put the coin on a string to carry it, or to hide it away from their purse, so it would not be stolen. In the 1700 and 1800's this was commonplace. It unfortunately decreases the value of the coin, just like cleaning a coin. I have a coin from year 326 that has never been cleaned.
