1 Till your garden and lay out rows.
2 Plant asparagus seeds 1/2-inch deep in the soil and 2 inches apart, once soil temperatures have reached 60 degrees in the spring.
3 Dig your plants from the ground a year later, before new growth starts.
4 Transplant the year-old plants to the permanent bed as soon as the garden soil can be worked.
5 Dig trenches 12 to 18 inches wide and 6 inches deep.
6 Place the year-old plants 9 to 12 inches apart.
7 Cover the crown of the asparagus plant with 2 inches of soil.
8 Fill the remaining part of the trench gradually throughout the summer, adding soil as your plants grow taller.
