@rosemaryforsythe i have 2 of these already 1 pink 1 black these play without the app and with app (app is not necessary for these to turn on and talk and learn words). i have had my other two since feb this yr and they are fun to listen to and see their eyes change(expressions)etc. and never used the app since i have a landline and not cellphone :). they take 4 AA batteries each.
