He was related to also exiled father Servando Teresa de Mier and other supporters of Mexican independence. For Mina, the struggle against absolutism represented by Fernando VII, could be in Spain and its colonies. Mina moved to the New World. He came to America in 1816 to prepare his expedition to New Spain, and the following year landed at Soto la Marina from where he began an epic military campaign that led him to move territories northeast and center of the viceroyalty. He scored sound victories like those of the Treasury and Peotillos The Arrastradero. Mina joined forces with the insurgent Pedro Moreno. After hard and varied battles with royalist forces, which demonstrated their military virtues, Mina was eventually captured in October 1817 and soon after shot.
