This CIRCULATED 2008 coin (Picture is Stock Photo) commemorates Carlos Bustamante (1774-1848). He was a Lawyer, journalist, politician and historian from Oaxaca, that knowing the events in Mexico City in 1808, deeply sympathized with the cause of independence. Faced with a possible political persecution by reason of the exercise of freedom of the press, Bustamante joined the insurgent forces of Morelos, published "Southern Mail" and participated in the sessions of the Congress of Chilpancingo, particularly in drafting the minutes of Independence and consequently, Bustamante was chased by royalist forces to be held in 1818 in San Juan de Ulua. Pardoned the following year, Bustamante resumed political activity, was confronted with Iturbide and returned to prison until 1823, when he joined the Congress.
