Description

The listing, KING SAGO PALM has ended.

You will be bidding on 2 large King Sago Palm seeds.
-Seeds are about an inch and a half in size.-

Cleaning the Seeds

Sago palm seeds are covered with a fruit wall that you should remove before planting the seeds. To soften the coating, soak the seeds in water for at least 24 hours. If the coating doesn't give, soak them for longer and change the water daily. To minimize bacteria growth, dip the peeled seeds in a solution of 10 parts water to 1 part bleach, and rinse them with water afterwards. If you're not planting them immediately, seal the seeds in a plastic bag and store them at 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Soak them in water one day before planting them.

Planting the Seeds

Sago palm seeds require well-drained, loose soil to grow. Fill a 4-inch diameter pot with a commercial seed-starting mix or a combination of equal parts of perlite and peat moss. Tamp the soil to level the surface. Push the seed sideways in the soil. Avoid burying the seed -- keep about one-third of the seed above soil level. Tamp the soil so it's firm around the seed, and moisten it with water. Cover the pot with plastic wrap to keep moisture in.

Germination

Sago seeds need a temperature between 70 and 100 F to germinate. Place the pot on a heating mat to provide a consistent temperature. Keep the soil damp throughout the germination period. Once the seeds germinate -- within about one to three months -- remove the plastic wrap and place them in a sunny window. Transplant the sago palms into larger pots as they grow. If you wish, you can plant them outside after about three years.

Are these palms suited to outdoors in colder climates? I live in northeast Tennessee and our winters get well below freezing and even dip below zero from time to time. However, we rarely ever stay at these extreme temperatures more than a day or so. I do not enough indoor space to winter them indoors as a potted plant. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

they are a southern Californian native so from the temps you mentioned I wouldn't grow outdoors....although you could put them outdoors in the summer months and bring them inside before temps get cooler...

I'm sorry but I want to make sure that these are safe around both animals and kids. I know some of the plants are poisonous that you have on here. Would this be safe for a house that has both kids and animals??
