Description

The listing, Authentic Nellie Begay Navajo Necklace mid-70s from Window Rock, AZ has ended.

This necklace was one of a large batch purchased by me in 1975 from Nellie Begay, a Navajo artisan living in Northern Arizona and a friend of my mother. My husband, a German national, showed Nellie's necklaces to his friend, a Dusseldorf jeweler. The friend was about to expand his shop and enthused about selling the necklaces, since there was nothing like them in Germany. We planned a Christmas stay with my mother in law and told him we would bring necklaces with us. Nothing was on paper; only over the phone, but he agreed to purchase them.

Nellie worked for several months on them, as a special order. We took them to Dusseldorf in November of '75, thinking we had a ready sale. When we arrived, we found that the jeweler had had a heart attack and was in the hospital. He was in for a long recovery and it seemed tacky to mention the necklaces, so we let it go.

When he finally recovered, he expressed an interest in them, but wasn't planning on expanding, as before. We had given away so many necklaces to friends and family as gifts, and had put the rest in my mother's storage shed. We couldn't make it to Germany again and by then, well, the moment had passed.

When my mother lost her battle with heart disease, I squeezed all of her things into my garage. I was surprised to find the necklaces still there, just as we had left them 36 years ago (although knowing her, I should not have been surprised.) This is one of the last few authentic Nellie Begay Navajo necklaces that I have left. It boasts sparkly clear beads with genuine jojoba accents. Gold colored spacer beads accent the piece, which is approximately 26" in circumference if you don't include the sunburst pendant. The sunburst itself is an additional 4" long.

On one of your previous auctions (today--Dec 29th) at the close of the auction I had said "Remember Wounded Knee!" Little did I realize that it was the actual 123rd anniversary of Wounded Knee! I only found out later in the afternoon when I was reading the newspaper. I have an awesome Spirit Guide!

Yes, you do! I am a true believer in spirit guides. Something similar happened to me last summer, on July 31st. I was going through my garage, cleaning, and I found a picture of my grandmother in Mom's things. She had very few pictures of grandma, who died when I was a child in 56, and I had never seen this one. Pictures weren't that common in Lithuania at the turn of the century. I was thrilled to have it, but was even more thrilled when I turned it around and found, "Ludviga Staskiene, born July 31, 1885. I wished her a happy 128th birthday, lol.

That is such a beautiful story about you finding your grandmothers photo on her actual birthday and I believe she guided you to find it! And it is even more incredible since her photo was so rare! She must be your Spirit Guide for sure--TY for sharing that--I get very sentimental sometimes! And you said she passed when you were very young right? Also, you mentioned that your mother said she "saw" your grandmother right? Sounds to me like your grandmother is "there for you"--do you know what I mean? I think you can ask for her guidance in life and she will help you. That is what Spirit Guides do and she was sort of letting you know that in a mystical way when you found her photo--sort of "here I am if you need me." (you found her photo for a reason--there are no coincidences) :-)

Thank you, buster, I'm glad to know that there's someone who doesn't think I'm nuts to believe in such things. :)

Wounded Knee massacre--Dec. 29th--1890. I read "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown around the same time my two stories happened that I told you about too. You are speaking of the 1973 Occupation of Wounded Knee and I was speaking of the massacre at Wounded Knee of 1890 or both it seems!
