The symbolism of the skull & crossbones can be traced to ancient Egypt. It was first seen on on the tomb of Tutankhamun, with the crossed crook and flail upon his chest, signifying a pharoah. Some of the earliest uses were to denote cemeteries. It was also a warning to passers during the Black Death to not enter the graveyards for fear of contracting the plague. During the Middle Ages, the Knights Templar adopted the image for tunics used in battle against Muslims. After the crusades, the image was adopted by the Freemasons to denote a master mason. Perhaps the most famous use of the skull & crossbones is the flag known as the "Jolly Roger" flown by pirates during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The origins of the flag are a mystery, but some historians believe that a small band of Knights Templar escaped and used the image while attacking ships loyal to Rome. New York state passed a law in 1829, that forced all manufacturers of poisons to place a skull & crossbones on their labels. There is a long military tradition using the skull & crossbones as emblems for battalions or organizations. Under Nazi-Germany, Hitler's SS agents wore a small skull & crossbones pin on their hats. The skull & crossbones has many meanings, some are danger or protection, strength, power, death or overcoming death, fearlessness, wisdom & guidance, immortality, death & rebirth.
