Fred Gladding was the first-ever "saves" champion, leading the league with 29 saves in the first season the stat was recognized. He pitched 13 major league seasons, including 7 as a relief specialist in Detroit where h compiled a 26-11 record with a 2.70 ERA. Following what was perhaps his best season (1.99 ERA and 12 saves in 1967), he was traded straight-up for (eventual Hall of Famer) Eddie Mathews.
