The mimosa tree originally is from Asia. It was first introduced into the United States in 1745 and during the 18th century it was grown primarily as an ornamental plant.
Habitat
The Albizia julibrissin grows well in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 6B to 9B, primarily from California east across the southern states. It prefers to grow in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions. Although it is drought tolerant, it has a healthier deep green color when watered.
Features
The mimosa tree is a fast-grower and can grow to a height of 15 to 40 feet, and may spread as much as 25 to 35 feet. It has oblong green leaves that are less than 2 inches long. This tree produces fragrant puffy pink flowers from late April to early July. The life expectancy of the silk tree is 10 to 20 years.
